About the name "Robertson"

The Robertsons who claim to be descendants of the Celtic Earls of Atholl are known as Clan Donnachaidh. Donnachaidh Reamar - Stout Duncan - led the clan at Bannockburn in support of Robert the Bruce. In 1451 the Robertson lands were erected into the Barony of Struan. In the 16th century part of these lands were lost to the Earl of Atholl. The Robertsons supported the Jacobites and fought under Montrose and Viscount Dundee and also in the 1715 and 1745 uprisings. Alexander, 17th chief fought in the cause of the Royal Stuarts in 1689, 1715 and 1745. There are many important branches of the clan.

The surname "Robertson" comes from Robert Ruabh Duncanson, who was the 4th clan chief in the 15th century. He was a strong supporter of King James I and was incensed by his murder. He tracked down and captured several of the regicides, Sir Robert Graham and the Master of Atholl hiding in a small glen and turned them over to the Crown. The Robertson crest badge of a right hand holding an imperial crown was awarded by King James II to Robert Ruabh, on August 15, 1451 as a reward for capturing the assassins of King James I in 1437.

It is from this chief that his descendants and many of his clanfolk took the name "Robert's sons" or Robertson.
